Women's empowerment: the key to preventing sex trafficking

So I would really like to focus on the initiatives that work to empower women and thereby prevent sex trafficking, violence against women etc. What question can I possibly answer?... What initiatives are being taken to empower women on an international level, how effective are they on a national level, and how can they be improved in policy and practice? Does this sound coherent? What suggestions do you have, and what possible problems do you foresee? As a result of my research methods class I feel like I need to come up with an independent and dependent variable. Does this sound like too much, and if so, how can I make this project doable?

I like your new focus but I do not know if it is doable. The questions you asked seemed coherent to me.Maybe not to overwhelm your research more but the last part of your question " How can they be improved in plicy and practice," perhaps you could discuss how awareness through education empowers women. The dilema of course is that not everyone is empowered through education. Do any of the afforementions organizations promote or raise awareness to underpriveledged classes? I am not sure what an independent/dependent variables are but maybe finding out if the organizations raise awareness or educate those who would not have the oppurtunity otherwise could possibly be an idependant/dependant variable.Hope this helps

  2. Jessica,
Your three-part question actually strikes me as a plausible organizing device for a complete thesis. To paraphrase you, (1) what are the international initiatives--this is a good survey research question, ideally providing an overview of what's being done already or is in the works; (2) how effective are they--this could work well if you try to get at one particular case area where the problem is quite severe; (3) how can they be improved--this part would be where you synthesize what you've learned about the problem on a local level with what you've learned about the effect or lack of effects of ongoing international initiatives to curb the problem, to make reasoned and evidence-based recommendations for improvements and/or continuations of particular policy initiatives. Put those three parts together well and you've got a good thesis right there. Now, whether that's the final thesis approach you settle on will partly depend on where your armchair research leads you first and then on what sort of local, case-specific study or studies you can muster. But the questions as you pose them are eminently appropriate for a project of this kind.

  3. Jessica,
several important steps recently, including the information from the internship and also the reformulation of the thesis.

I agree with Mark that this is potentially better than the more vague sex trafficking/education levels you were working with.

My suggestion is that you keep on with the research, gather as much information as you can and follow the trends in the information. In other words, look for a thread you'd like to follow through the literature.

  4. Not to complicate things further, but what countries are you going to be looking at, and will you be seeing how similar initiatives work differently in different places? Or do you have a single country you are focusing on?

  5. All the questions you asked in your post should be smooshed into one big question. The answer to all of those sounds like a coherent and, honestly, a very interesting topic. I want to read more about it. I can't wait to see what you come up with next.

  6. You mentioned that your favorite movies are mainly documentaries; as far as you thesis goes, have you thought of making a documentary based on your research findings? If so, you can get good and reliable data and recording material from your internship in Geneva for that purpose. I think that reading you research would be interesting, but also having a visual "experience" about your findings would definitely add to it.
